What are the 4 C's?
The 4 C’s devised by the Gemological Institute of America are Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight.
- The cut is responsible for the diamonds’ brilliance, fire and dispersion. The amount of light reflection of a diamond is heavily dependent on the cut, making it the most important of all the 4 C’s.
- The color refers to the lack of color, indicating how clear or color-free a diamond is. Most diamonds in the retail trade display color in the form of a hint of yellow or brown color.
- The clarity refers to the amount of identifying characteristics like imperfections, marks, inclusions and blemishes on the surface of or within a diamond.
- Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. 1 carat equals 100 cents or 100 points.
